Peterborough Sea Cadets "Row" in the Dough

Peterborough Sea Cadets Angelina Nguyen and Nico Smies were 'rowing in the dough' this summer (2018). They were employed at HMCS Ontario which is the Sea Cadet camp that runs every summer out of RMC in Kingston.

Cadet Nguyen is a Chief Petty Officer in her home corps of RCSCC Howe in Peterborough. While employed at HMCS Ontario however she worked as a Petty Officer First Class.

PO Nguyen was responsible for training cadets in Seamanship for 6 weeks the summer of 2018. This role provided her with both excellent pay in preparation for going to University in the fall and it gave her a great opportunity to practice the leadership skills she learned in her Sea Cadet training.

Seamanship trains cadets in the use of powered boats and larger sail craft such as the whalers that are used extensively by cadets in the summer. Cadets who specialize in Seamanship are more likely to deploy to Naval Ships or Tall ships as part of the cadet program.

PO Smies was responsible for maintaining the many boats used by the various courses run at HMCS Ontario during the summer. He was able to use his specialized training as a shipwright in keeping the boats seaworthy.

Smies was also able to join the HMCS Ontario band for the Old Fort Henry Tattoo and the Ceremony of the flags in Ottawa.

As a support staff Smies was able to get an extra week of employment for camp tear down giving him 7 weeks of full time work for the summer.
